Escape the rat race, step out into a different world and experience the real Australia, right on Canberra’s doorstep. The Telstra Gundaroo Bush Festival, on Sunday 9 November, is a celebration of Australia’s bush culture.
Only half an hour from Canberra, Gundaroo is one of the region’s treasures – step back in time to our rural past and wander down historic Cork Street. Watch sheep dog trials, woodchopping competitions and Gundaroo’s signature event – the dog high jump, listen to music, bush poetry and pantomimes, meet some of Gundaroo’s friendly locals, and stop for a refreshing beverage and some delicious country food.
The festival has something for everyone with dog and horse events, market stalls, country food and produce, rides, music and entertainment.
And for a good laugh, brave the flying jelly and custard at the Great Gundaroo Pie Fight, or dress up your dog or horse in fancy dress. Watch the action in the Woolly Gundaroo Cup (watch those poddys run!), or the terrier race. And if you are up for a bit of a thrill, try billy cart racing or a helicopter ride.
The Gundaroo Bush Festival markets will feature lots of great country food and local produce (it is in the heart of Canberra’s wine-growing region) as well as a wide range of art and craft stalls and displays, including the “Creative Country” Gundaroo Bush Festival Telstra Art Show, featuring many talented local artists and their work including painting, pottery, sculpture, textiles, jewellery and photographs.
The Gundaroo Bush Festival is proudly organised by the Gundaroo village community and is non-profit. All proceeds go to local charities. The Festival has been in existence now for more than 10 years. Every year is different, but the community and Aussie bush spirit, and the sense of fun remain the same.
Young or old, or somewhere in between, there is something here for you. Bring the whole family – and the dog! Here’s your chance to have a great day out – head for Gundaroo on Sunday 9 November, 10am – 4pm. The Gundaroo Bush Festival is sponsored by Telstra.
