Brothers to defend local pride against Tasmanians

What originally started off as a cane chair, mixed with the butchered parts of a golf cart and bolted to some old wood – has been fitted with a roll-cage, muffler and ‘state-of-the-art’ hand brake. Everything a budding young Mark Webber would want in their formula one billycart.

Twins Benjamin and Samuel Fawcett, explain in this Audio News Release (ANR) their preparation to make ready their ‘chariot of war’ for the Telstra Gundaroo Bush Festival Billy Cart race. Hot on their heels, a team of Tasmanian Scouts who will cross the Tasman to battle it out for poll position in the great race.

“It took a few hours to make,” says Benjamin Fawcett, Co-driver of Team Fawcett’s Billy Cart.

“Then we had to get the roll cage built,” adds twin brother, Samuel Fawcett.

Both agree, their mighty machine is as mean as it looks. It’s the Cadillac of the Billy Cart world – without the massive carbon footprint.

“They put us on a back of a truck and we roll down a ramp. So it needs to be a little bit heavy to get the speed,” said Samuel Fawcett.

“We road tested it at our Dad’s place,” grins Benjamin Fawcett. “It goes.”

The tapping of hammers could be heard through Gundaroo as other road warriors busily built their Billy Carts for Sunday’s race. Those budding Mark Skaife’s and Kimmy Raikkonen’s wanting to enter their own Billy Carts should visit the official festival site to register: www.gundaroobushfestival.org.au or you can register on the day.

First place winners will pick up a cash prize of $1000, thanks to Wieland Helicopters.
