What do a school teacher, senior public servant and local farmer near all have in common?
Answer – they are most likely members of the Gundaroo Bush Fire Brigade, and most likely using a portable radio that money from previous bush festivals helped raise.
Deputy Captain of the Gundaroo Bush Fire Brigade, Nick Drew explains in this Audio News Release (ANR) what it takes to be a NSW Rural Fire Service volunteer, and how you and your family can help to save lives and property.
“It’s a great way to put something back into the community,” says Nick Drew. “I sit behind a desk most of the day now, but being a part of the Bush Fire Brigade lets me keep some invaluable practical skills up-to-date.”
Others agree, with the Gundaroo Brigade made up of a wide cross section of people, all willing to lend a helping hand in a time of crisis.
“The Gundaroo Bush Fire Brigade not only put out fires, we respond to road accidents, natural disasters and a variety of other calls for assistance. Some of the equipment we use is purchased through funds raised at event s like the Telstra Gundaroo Bush Festival on Sunday 9 November.”
To demonstrate just how ready, willing and capable bushfire volunteers are, Nick Drew and the members of the Gundaroo Bushfire Brigade will carry out a demonstration of fire fighting and rescue during the day. It’s also a good opportunity to learn more about fire safety and how you and your family can help Nick and his colleagues, continue to help the people of NSW and the ACT through their work as volunteer fire fighters.
