Once upon a time, before Canberra, came Gundaroo

Charlie Parmain is a wool classer by day and local historian and story teller by night. While only relatively new to Gundaroo, by about 40-years, Charlie knows quite a lot about the town’s rich history, and colourful characters. While he might quietly disagree, Charlie just happens to be one of those, ‘colourful characters’.

“People who live in Gundaroo have one common denominator. They’ve all got the same screw loose,” a quote taken from The Prickle Farm, by Mike Hayes and used by Charlie Parmain to sum-up some of Gundaroo’s characters.

In this Audio News Release (ANR), Charlie speaks about the heritage of the Gundaroo Bush Festival as it evolved from a simple idea in its fist incarnation to the famous event it has now become.

“The first event drew a crowd of around 20,000 people,” recalls the Gundaroo local. “It got so chaotic, the place ran out of beer and we had to send a posse to Gunning to buy 100 cartons of whatever we could buy.”

“Gunning was happy, Gundaroo was happy – but we would never have thought so many people would have come to that event,”

There are many great stories, works of art, poetry and local produce – all available on the day during the Telstra Gundaroo Bush Festival, on Sunday 9 November, 10am -- 4pm.

Charlie and some of the other long-time locals will all be available to share a yarn with as Cork Street is returned to its former glory as the bush festival epicentre. Make sure you and your family not only enjoy what’s on offer at the festival. Also take the time to admire the rich history of the buildings and the people who live and work in those buildings.

Telstra Gundaroo Bush Festival is a celebration of life in the bush and an insight into the story that reads; ‘once upon a time, before Canberra, came Gundaroo.’
